Santa Marta, or as its name says Distrito Turistico, Cultural e Historico de Santa Marta (from the Constitution of 1991), is the capital city of the Magdalena department. Founded by the Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas on July 29, 1525 it is the oldest city in Colombia and the second oldest city in South America since the first was Cumana, located in Venezuela in 1521.

History of the Governorship of Magdalena



Originally in this space was the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo but after the tragic earthquake of 1834 it was completely destroyed. Years later the Old Hotel Tayrona was built, which was the center of social gatherings of Santa Marta since its construction in 1924 until 1975, when this building became the official headquarters of the Magdalena Government.

Currently this building is part of the reconstruction plan of the historical city center by the government to be converted back to one of the leading hotels in the city. The headquarters is headed by the Governor in charge General (r) Manuel Jose Bonnet Locarno chosen by presidential decree in January 3rd 2011 until January 1st of 2012.
